How to Start a Skincare Routine From Scratch: A Northville Beginner's Guide
Four products, five minutes a day, no jargon. The routine we build for a first-time guest before we recommend anything else.

The number one reason people give up on skincare is that they tried to start with seven products. Their skin flared, they blamed themselves, and the whole bathroom shelf ended up in a drawer.
There's a better way in. If you've never had a routine, or you're rebuilding after a long break, this is the exact starter kit we recommend at Skin Experts — four products, in this order.

1. A gentle cleanser (morning optional, night always)
Non-foaming, fragrance-free, ceramide-based. If your face feels squeaky or tight after washing, the cleanser is doing too much.
In winter, skip the morning wash — rinse with lukewarm water instead. In summer, a light cleanse in the morning is fine.
2. A moisturizer (morning and night)
One bottle, both times of day, for the first six weeks. Don't chase a separate day cream and night cream yet. A basic ceramide + hyaluronic acid + niacinamide lotion covers 90% of what your skin needs.
Apply while your skin is still slightly damp from cleansing. That one habit outperforms most $60 serums.

3. A daily sunscreen (mornings)
This is the one non-negotiable. Broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, worn every morning — indoors too. Standard window glass blocks UVB but not UVA, and UVA is the wavelength behind most of what people call 'aging skin.'
Texture matters more than brand. If you don't like how it feels, you won't wear it. Try two or three until you find one that disappears on your skin.
4. One active — but not yet
Do the three products above for a full six weeks before adding anything. Six weeks is roughly one skin-cell cycle for an adult, and it's how long it takes to see whether the basics alone are enough.
After that, most people add one of two things: a vitamin C serum in the morning (for tone and sun damage) or a low-strength retinoid at night (for texture and fine lines). Never both on day one. Two nights a week to start.
What to skip on purpose
Toners, essences, ampoules, sheet masks, jade rollers, and 10-step routines. None of them are wrong; none of them are the point when you're starting out. Nail the four above for two months, then add one thing at a time and pay attention.
When to add what.
- Week 1Add cleanser (nights) and moisturizer (AM + PM). Start SPF every morning.
- Weeks 2–6Do nothing new. Really. Let your skin adjust before you judge anything.
- Week 6Assess. If skin feels calm and hydrated, you may not need an active yet.
- Week 8+Optionally add one active — vitamin C (AM) or a retinoid (PM), not both. Two nights a week to start.
If you're new to skincare, the fastest way to see results isn't more products — it's the same four products, done consistently, for two months. Then we can be interesting.
